As a result of Beijing’s decision to relax the prison-like regulations that had mostly held the virus at bay but devastated the country’s economy and provoked widespread protests, hospitals around China are being inundated by an eruption of Covid cases.
Many Chinese nationals began making trip arrangements abroad after the nation announced on Monday that it will discontinue the practice of mandatory quarantine upon arrival of these travel restrictions will be lifted after 5th of January.
In response, the US and several other nations declared they would demand negative Covid testing for all visitors from the Chinese mainland.
On the other hand, Australia’s Current Labor government would roll out the red carpet for China without any travel restrictions risking the lives of their citizens in its attempt to appease China and attempt to gain closer relations, completely forgetting everything that was learnt in the past 2 years of the pandemic and China’s abusive behaviour with their trade embargoes, it gave Australia on beef and wine for wanting an inquiry and investigation on COVID-19 to help prevent future outbreaks.
A senior US health official gave reporters a phone briefing and said, “The recent rapid surge in Covid-19 transmission in China increases the likelihood for new variations arising.”
There have been reports in China of more severe symptoms such as respiratory infections than the more prevalent omicron variant. This may be due to their lack of herd immunity due to ghetto or prison-like lockdowns, vaccines and natural immunity. There are also many cases of flu, RSV(Respiratory syncytial virus) and potentially different variants of COVID-19 spreading in China.
