DEFCON defence readiness condition alert system

USA tests MinuteMan 2 ICBM in August 2022 to prepare for a Nuclear Response.

DEFCON, short for defence readiness condition, is an alert system used by the United States Armed Forces to indicate the level of risk of nuclear war. It is a system of categorizing the levels of readiness for U.S. military forces, from DEFCON 5 (least ready) to DEFCON 1 (most ready). This is to provide a common language for discussing the state of global nuclear war.

The DEFCON system was developed in 1958 by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and is now managed by U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM). It provides a graduated set of readiness levels that can be applied to all U.S. military forces, as well as those of its allies, in order to clearly indicate whether these forces are prepared for combat with an enemy force or not.

DEFCON 5: FADE OUT – Minimum readiness. Surveillance is normal and leave is not cancelled.

This is the lowest level of lowest and surveillance that the United States has ever been on. This means that all citizens should be on normal alert and report any suspicious activity to authorities. Increased surveillance is necessary in order to protect our country from terrorist attacks.

DEFCON 4: DOUBLE TAKE – Normal readiness. Some forces are on alert and increased surveillance.

DEFCON 4 is the second lowest level of readiness. Although some forces are on high alert and there is increased surveillance, for the most part, life goes on as normal.
Many people don’t even know what DEFCON levels are, and that’s understandable. After all, it’s not like we have drills or anything to prepare for a nuclear attack. But the truth is that the US government takes this threat very seriously, and they are always monitoring the situation. Even at DEFCON 4, our forces are ready to respond quickly and effectively to any threat.

DEFCON 3: ROUND HOUSE – Increased readiness. More forces are on alert and increased surveillance.

The United States was at DEFCON 3 during the tensions between nuclear powers and at the beginning of. the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, while Europe and NATO moved to DEFCON 2 due to their proximity to Russian aggression. This means that more forces are on alert and increased surveillance is taking place. The US is convinced that there is a heightened risk of attack and is taking steps to ensure its safety.

This move comes after weeks of tension between the US and North Korea. North Korea has been testing missiles and making threats against the US, which has led to an increase in American rhetoric as well.

The US believes that it is necessary to take these steps in order to protect itself and its allies from Russian, China, Iran or North Korean aggression. It remains to be seen how Russia will respond to this increase in American readiness, but the situation remains tense.

Since the Cold War, the United States has been in a state of DEFCON 3 or its peak in the Cuban Missile Crisis at DEFCON 2, which is characterized by increased force readiness in case of a nuclear attack.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a dangerous time for both the United States and the Soviet Union. The crisis began when the Soviet Union detected that the United States had installed nuclear-tipped missiles in Turkey and the Soviets installed nuclear-armed missiles in Cuba. The Soviets believed that this would allow the United States to launch a first strike against them, which would lead to World War III.

In order to prevent this from happening, the Soviets threatened to launch their own nuclear missiles at the United States if they didn’t remove the missiles. The Americans were worried that this would start a nuclear war, so they agreed to remove the missiles. However, they didn’t trust the Soviets, so they kept some of them hidden.

The height of the crisis was when the United States implemented a blockade around Cuba to prevent further nuclear weapons from being smuggled into Cuba.

The following day, the Pentagon referred to it as having taken place on “Black Saturday.” The US Navy dropped a series of “signalling” depth charges (depth charges the size of hand grenades) on a Soviet submarine (B-59) at the blockade line, unaware that it was armed with a nuclear weapon and was subject to orders allowing it to be used if any damage was done to the submarine by depth charges

As the submarine was too deep to monitor radio communications, the captain of the B-59, Valentin Grigoryevich Savitsky, realized that a submarine versus a surface ship might be on the verge of an open battle and planned to launch a secret nuclear torpedo.

However, the captain of the submarine Flotilla, Vasily Arkhipov, was at B-59, so he had also to agree. Arkhipov opposed it, and the nuclear launch narrowly eluded WW3.

The crisis ended when President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev reached a deal where both sides would remove their missiles, with no military action being taken. This prevented a full-blown war from happening and allowed for continued Cold War cooperation between the two countries.

DEFCON 2: FAST PACE – Next step to nuclear war. High readiness. Increased intelligence and strengthened security measures.

The United States is now most likely on DEFCON 2, the next step to nuclear war. This means that the country is in a state of high readiness, with increased intelligence and strengthened security measures.

This is confirmed by the US President’s (Biden) Speech regarding (If Putin uses a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine, the entire world will face Armageddon – See the article for more information) and also the recent testing of the USA’s Minute Man 2 ICBM. It’s fairly normal to see frequently of Russia and North Korea test and sabre rattle their nuclear weapons but it’s another story when the US starts testing their weapons.

Some experts are worried that this could lead to a nuclear war, as the tensions between the US, NATO and Russia, China and North Korea tensions continue to rise and mistakes happen. Others believe that this is simply a precautionary measure, and that war is not imminent.

either way, it is clear that the situation is serious, and the world is watching closely to see what will happen next.

DEFCON 1: COCKED PISTOL – Nuclear war is imminent or has already begun

It’s the middle of the night and you’re jolted awake by the sound of your phone ringing. You see an unknown number on the caller ID, but you answer it anyway. On the other end of the line is a frantic voice. They tell you to turn on your TV. You do as they say and flip on the news. And that’s when you see it: DEFCON 1. Nuclear war is imminent or has already begun.
You quickly gather your family and supplies and head to your nearest bomb shelter. But it’s not just a nuclear attack you have to worry about now – it could be biological warfare, chemical warfare, cyber warfare, EMP attack…the list goes on. Civilization as you know is about to end, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.

Your time to prepare is up. You now must survive the consequences of the declining modern society and years of terrible choices for global political leadership.

What to do in case of a nuclear strike

In the event of a nuclear strike, the first 72 hours will be crucial to surviving the aftermath. There are certain steps you can take to maximize the likelihood of surviving a nuclear attack. If you live in an area at risk of being hit by a nuclear strike, here are the things you should do if a nuclear attack warning is issued:

1. Duck and take cover. Do not look into the blast or fireball, this will cause temporary or permanent blindness. A nuclear attack is similar to having multiple extremely severe natural disasters hitting you at once. It’s similar to getting hit by an earthquake, a hurricane/a typhoon/storm. Take cover under the table in case your building collapses.
